From [info]renegade500: Florida teacher fired for using "wizardry." He did a sleight of hand magic trick for the kids.

I guess he's lucky they didn't burn him at the stake.

I had an absolutely fabulous day yesterday involving an exploding transformer somewhere nearby in the neighborhood and no power through most of the afternoon. It had been raining all day, so the house was very dark, gloomy, and mostly inactive. About the only thing that was working were the fancy imitation faux-old-timey phones, which under these circumstances sure do make up for their lack of features. I decided to conserve the laptop battery for emergencies (rather than use it to stare at the not-working router or admire my collection of downloaded Joe Flanigan jpgs) and did some writing on paper and reading. I also spent some quality time brushing the cats. About the time I was trying to decide if using the fireplace to heat water for tea on a warm humid day was a crazy idea, the power came back on.

I should clarify he was a substitute teacher, but the WTF factor is no less for that.

Sorry about no power, but overall it didn't sound like a horrible afternoon. We got a little rain here early in the morning yesterday and then that was it - just lots of crazy humidity after that.

Unless "toothpick" is code for "penis", that's one of the stupidest damned things I've ever read.

I also spent some quality time brushing the cats.

Let's just hope they don't use their wily feline powers to cause more blackouts to get more quality brushing time. :-)

Hahaha - sometimes a toothpick is just a toothpick (as in this case). :-)

You know, if it doesn't go on for too long (like the five days I went without power during the ice storm we had up here last winter), being without power is incredibly relaxing and peaceful, to me. It's so quiet... not even the hum of the refrigerator... I love it.

Yep, lost power here too. Around 11:40 p.m. a raccoon shorted the bus bars at a nearby substation. That wouldn't have been a problem for my wife and I, except all our electronic devices with battery backups started queeping loudly -- the batteries hadn't been replaced and the "low juice" warnings were going off. I can now testify that the burglar alarm bad battery warning is particularly unpleasant. Yeesh.
