ApolloCon in Houston is the weekend after this one, but unfortunately I'll only be able to be there on Saturday. When it came down to it, we just couldn't afford the two nights in the hotel, so I'll just be daytripping in for Saturday programming.

In the department of Die, Sears, Die: Yesterday was not good. After waiting a week for someone from Sears to come out and fix the garage door, we found out that Sears had gone through all the motions of making the service appointment but not actually made it, which was somehow our fault because of course Sears can't take responsibility for any mistakes its employees make that screw over its customers, that would be crazy. So another company is coming out to look at it today, and from what it sounds like after discussing the problem with a rational person, we'll probably need to replace the whole opener (it's 13 years old and gears keep breaking) which we can't afford.

Die, Weather, Die: It's really hot, already. We hit 100 yesterday.

Yeesh! Sorry about the opener!

Thanks. Yeah, it's going to be expensive to replace it. But if it is the gears, trying to fix it just means it'll keep breaking down every few months, which will eventually cost more than just replacing it now. That's what happened with the old opener that was here when we first moved into the house.

That's why, when one of our springs broke, we just went ahead and replaced all of them. The service call alone was over $100, so we just bundled them and hoped we made the best decision.

Sorry it's pinching you financially!

Its one of the reasons I stopped buying stuff from Sears. Ten years ago their service department was the best in the country, now you really have to triple check them, to make sure they are coming, and know what they are coming for.

For major appliances I now use Best Buy, and a small independent local company called Ajay appliance.

Could you switch the door to manual open only? You'd have to get out of the car, but it would probably save you some money.

We couldn't get the manual open to work -- the door would start to slide down. We found out when the repairperson came that this was because Sears installed it wrong in the first place.

Yeah, we're not using Sears again. It'll be Best Buy or a local company.

Alas, I remember when Sears used to be a good store. Unfortunately, that was many years ago.

I commiserate with your weather woes. We're at 100 here again ourselves.

Yeah, I think this summer is going to be pretty miserable.

Okay, that just bites! You can go manual for a while though right? We've had ours go belly up twice in 9 years. Latest from an overload from a thunderstorm. Fried the motor out. Ugh.

And yeah Texas summer is now upon us. Get ready to cook eggs on the hood of the car. heh heh

No, it wouldn't work on manual -- something wasn't attached right and the door wasn't balanced, so it wouldn't stay open unless someone held on to it.

If it's this hot now, I'm really not looking forward to August!
