Another great informational post from tacithydra: Freivald's Flash Fiction Online is a Queer Unfriendly Market. They refused an ad for Crossed Genres Magazine LGBTQ issue.

BTW, the lovely art for the ad is by Paul Davey: Mattahan and he's got some new art up on his deviantart site, including some Dossouye portraits (from Charles Saunders' fantasy novel Dossouye).

On the personal front, things are not good. As far as we know, Troyce is still scheduled to be laid off at the end of this month. He's applied for the few IT jobs that are listed at the university, here in town, and outside of town, but there's been no word back yet. The jobs tend to appear for a short time in the listings, then get pulled, probably because there are so many applicants.

I got a hellaciously painful cramp in my left hand from typing Tuesday, so bad I thought I had actually sprained my hand somehow. It started to feel better fairly soon and was pretty much gone by yesterday afternoon, but damn. I think I have a better idea now of how much I can type in a ten-hour period and how I shouldn't do more than that. stina_leicht said that calcium can help, and I noticed I had been slacking off on my calcium pills lately. So let that be a lesson to the rest of you.

And the weather has been much better. There was a cold front last week that dropped the temperature to 90, and the past couple of days it's been raining. It's also hurricane season, so I need to remember to start stocking up on canned food, cat supplies, etc.

And here's a link to a list of Hurricane Ike Anniversary Events at Galveston

::still thinking good thoughts about the job hunt::

Potassium is good for muscle cramps too. My leg cramps have diminished since I started eating a banana per day whenever I could. For me, a glass of OJ can help relieve them while they're happening.

Huh, I knew about bananas as a remedy for cramps but not orange juice.

A cup of OJ has about half the potassium of a banana (which still puts it in the potassium-rich category), but I think the juice probably metabolizes faster ... or maybe the power of placebo is strong in my case. But it's worth a shot. I had them several times early in the morning - waking me up, unsurprisingly - and chugging some juice (fetched by my husband) seemed to help them a lot.

B-complex vitamins are good for alleviating pain from carpal tunnel and related syndromes, so this might also be helpful in reducing cramps in your hand.

Huh, I didn't know that. I take B-complex every day anyway, for other reasons, so maybe it's keeping me from being any worse than I already am. :)

How widely are you casting the job net? Most of the jobs I'd see on internal boards would be no closer than Austin.

If he can't find anything here, he's going to start looking in Houston and Austin. We can't afford to sell our house and move, but we do have friends living in both places he could stay with.

I'm in the games industry, which seems to have centered in Dallas and Austin for your state. Mention when you start looking more broadly and I'll query the internal jobs board for my company.

Best of luck. I remember looking for work from College Station; it wasn't the most fun experience I've ever had, and that was in a reasonably up economy.

Thanks very much! I'll definitely check with you when/if we get to that point.

*fingers crossed on the job front*

Also, *hugs a lot*

Keeping good thoughts for you guys!

Hey lady, I'm collecting commentary here, and am linking to this (if you want me to remove your link, just respond to this comment and tell me so).

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the job hunt (and now taking some calcium...).

No prob, linking is fine!

And thanks. :)
