A while back we decided we wanted to try planting a vegetable garden and a couple of weekends ago Troyce built a raised bed for it. This morning we had the bulk dirt and rock place deliver a load a dirt for it. Dirt from the bulk dirt place is ridiculously cheap compared to a home garden place like Lowe's, but you have to get kind of a lot of it. I have been moving dirt via wheelbarrow and shovel all morning, and I fear we have...a lot of dirt.

I'm taking a break now, but...that's a lot of dirt.

The Nebula Nominations are posted! Congrats to all the nominees, especially J. Kathleen Cheney j_cheney and Christopher Kastensmidt ckastens!

John Scalzi on the Borders' Bankruptcy and Writers So basically, if you’re worried that the Borders bankruptcy is going to screw writers, you’re using the incorrect tense. That screwing has already happened, and now we just have to wait for the effects to catch up to us. We may be additionally screwed from here, of course. We’ll have to see what happens.

The Shared Worlds Teen SF/Fantasy Writing Camp–Register Soon! Now open to applicants: Shared Worlds 2011 will be held at Wofford College (Spartanburg, SC) the last two weeks of July, marking the camp’s fourth year of operation. Guest instructors will include Carl Brandon Parallax Award winner and YA novelist Nnedi Okorafor, World Fantasy Award winner Jeff VanderMeer, Hugo Award winning editor Ann VanderMeer, Philip K. Dick Award finalist Minister Faust, World Fantasy Award winner Ekaterina Sedia, and trend-setting game designer Will Hindmarch.

ETA:

This is the pile after I worked on it for about three to four hours. Its hard to tell from here, but it was about four feet high.

This is the raised garden bed. It's about a foot deep, and all that dirt used to be in the pile.

Have just bought Cloud Roads! I won't get to it for a little bit, since I'm only 1/2 way through the first Erickson book, but I'm really, really looking forward to it.

Yay! I hope you enjoy it. :)

Thanks ;o) And I hope your arms and shoulders survive the next few days!

The peanut gallery wants pictures of the dirt :-)

Okay, added pictures to the post! :)

Damn. That's a lot of dirt.

This is the first time we've tried vegetables, but I've had good luck with other plants, so we'll just have to see.

Thanks, Martha!

And good luck with the dirt!

That is some SERIOUS dirt!!!

And it smells terrible! It has "organic matter" in it (otherwise known as poo).

oh, ick.

but on a happier note, my book finally got here, so I can read it on the plane to Vegas!! :-)

Yay! And have fun in Vegas!

Our winter was a lot harder this year than normal, but at least it ended on time. :)

That is indeed a huge pile of dirt!

BTW, I got The Cloud Roads from Amazon today. Yeah!

Good luck with the garden project! ☺ I've just recently started with potted gardening (as we don't have a backyard or even a good size lawn). So far, the ground lilies, the mums are fairing well. ☺

Thanks! We'll have to see how it works out. I'm okay with ornamental plants, but I've never tried vegetables before.

Raised garden beds. it's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.
