Feeling kind of under the weather so far this week. I'm getting work done, but I'm having trouble mustering enthusiasm. Perhaps looking at Joe Flanigan will help.

Cat Looking for Home After Owner Passes Away - Houston Area Please pass this on. It really does help to get the word out.

This was going around on FaceBook: To display a list of New York Times best sellers for the week of your birth.

I think Bill Crider posted this one: Libraries of the Rich and Famous Karl Lagerfeld has a serious working library.

From LJ News: We were so inspired by your compassion that we've decided to run a two-day charitable vgift drive. Beginning next week, from Thursday, January 28th, 4pm, through Saturday, January 30th, 3:59pm, PST, we'll donate 100 percent of the proceeds from all vgift sales to CARE and UNICEF (we'll cover the credit card processing fees). And, remember, for each $10 you receive in vgifts during a two-week period, you'll get two months of paid account time.

That starts at 4:00 pm Pacific Time today, and the vgift page is here.

help_haiti, which has already raised over $72,000 in the first round of auctions, is starting another lightning round today.

Yesterday I sanded the kitchen cabinets, cleaned up after the sanding (sanding took about half an hour, cleaning up the dust about four hours), and today I'm painting. It seemed like a good idea a couple of days okay, but now I'm really tired and I have about half a kitchen to go. I should probably eat lunch, that would probably help a lot.

News passed along by tinpra: Bloombury is going to rejacket Magic Under Glass Enough people must have emailed. (The link to the Bloomsbury site with the official word is here.)

The Leaky Cauldron is having a Help Haiti Heal livestream fundraising event this Saturday.

It looks like help_haiti's first round of auctions did really, really well. ETA at 7AM on Thursday, January 21: Thanks to our Confirmation Tabulators, we now know that over $15,000 in donations have been confirmed by Offerors - and that doesn't include the $1,500 donated by our lovely anon to UNICEF or the donations confirmed by the Mods. There's a lot more to come, too.

estara won the signed copy of Wheel of the Infinite for $50.00, and also threw in the postage it'll take for me to send the book to Germany. Yay!

DearAuthor asks YA readers to write Bloomsbury about yet another whitewashed YA cover. Bloomsbury tried to publish Liar by Justine Larbalestier with a photo of a white girl standing in for the dark-skinned protagonist, but was persuaded to change the cover. Now they've done the same thing for Magic Under Glass by Jaclyn Dolamore. This crap is going to keep happening unless readers speak up and keep protesting it. DearAuthor has the addresses and links to write or email in.

ETA 01/22/2010 - People must have written in: Bloomsbury plans to rejacket Magic Under Glass

ETA: As jimhines says Please keep in mind that authors have little to no control over their cover art. Larbalestier was able to push for new artwork for her book, but she’s a fairly high-clout author and was able to rally reader/fan support. Generally, the author has little input into the cover.

ETA again: here's a post I made a couple of years ago about the cover of Wheel of the Infinite, with some info from the cover artist Donato Giancola.

The first round of auctions at the help_haiti fundraising community is over tomorrow, January 20. My auction for the signed hardcover of Wheel of the Infinite is here, and the high bid is currently $50.00.

The Crossed Genres Magazine Post a Free Story for Haiti page now has a section for stories in Portugese. If you read and enjoy any of the stories listed, please consider a donation for Haiti. My story is an adventure fantasy, Houses of the Dead.

Pat Rothfuss' Worldbuilders fundraiser for Heifer International was over on January 15, and raised over $128,000, which is the total without the matching donations added in. Wow.

From Sarah Weinman's blog: author Robert B. Parker has passed away.

From Richard White at WriterBeware: An Open Letter from a Writer to New Publishers See, just as every writer does not "deserve" to be published, not every person who dreams of being a publisher deserves to hang out a shingle and call themselves such.

I just finished reading The Charm Stone by Lillian Stewart Carl, and very much enjoyed it. It's part of her modern day mystery/ghost story series with Jean Fairbairn and Alisdair Cameron, and this one takes place in Colonial Willamsburg.

And AggieCon 41 in College Station, Texas, is rapidly approaching. It'll be the weekend of February, 5-7, and I'm listed as Special Guest.

New Short Story

I just posted Houses of the Dead to my web site as part of the Crossed Genres Post a Story for Haiti effort.

It was first published in Black Gate #12, July 2008. It's a Giliead and Ilias story, one of the prequel stories to the Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy.
This was what the Journals didn't mention about the lives of Chosen Vessels and their companions. Ilias supposed it didn't make good poetry: And then the Vessel of Cineth Giliead and his foster brother Ilias spent the afternoon digging in the middens looking for parts of the dead girl, hoping the dogs hadn't gotten to her and that they could find enough of her to perform the rites on.

Please check out the other stories listed at Crossed Genres and consider making a donation for Haiti. There's a lot of good stories there.

I've put a hardcover copy of my book Wheel of the Infinite up for auction in the help_haiti fundraising community here.

You bid by replying to the comment, and when the auction closes on January 20, the winner will pay by donating directly to one of the charitable organizations on the community's list. The winner can then forward me an email receipt or screencap of the donation, shipping info, and how you want the book signed, and I'll send it to you.

There are a lot of other cool things up for auction, offers to write fanfic, make art, or finished jewelry, like these three Orthoceras fossil pendants, wrapped in silver wire by lillian13
