It stayed below freezing all yesterday and all night, and I'm afraid to look at what's left of my backyard. At least our pipes didn't burst like a lot of other people's did. It's supposed to get up to 40 today, which sounds very warm at the moment.

I made a big pot of butternut squash soup again last night, and marycrawford's suggestion about baking it for a little first to make it easier to cut up worked great. We're going to a potluck dinner tonight and I'm still deciding what to make. Maybe spoonbread? I dunno.

I finished reading P.N. Elrod's new book in her Vampire Files series, Dark Road Rising and very much enjoyed it. I'm not usually big on Twilight-type vampires (I like Blade and Buffy, who kill a lot of vampires) but I really like this series. It's set in 1930s Chicago, and the main character is a reporter who wakes up a vampire after he's killed by mobsters. Solving mysteries is a big part of the series, and the main character eventually allies with Charles Escott, a British private detective and Shoe Coldfield, the leader of Chicago's black mob, and lots of other interesting people.

Everybody stay warm for the weekend, especially those of you currently buried under snow and ice.
