Cherie Priest has a great post here: Things You Can Do About the Oil Spill. She mentions in there about consuming less petroleum, and how this isn't possible for a lot of us who don't have access to mass transportation, and that one other way to do it is by using fewer petroleum-based products.

One easy way to do it that I've found is to stop using petroleum-based laundry detergents and other cleaners, and go with plant-based ones instead.

Here's a review of Six Green Laundry Detergents (I use Seventh Generation for laundry and the dishwasher, because I like it and it's easy to find in the grocery store. I'm a big fan of trying different ones out and seeing which works best for you.)

Couple of more links: Facts about Vegetable-based Detergents (this hits the highlights), and How Toxic Are Your Cleaning Supplies (this goes into a lot more depth and detail)
