Books:

I got to read an arc of A Spider on the Stairs by Cassandra Chan (book_wench) and really enjoyed it. This is part of a mystery series, set in modern-day Britain, but with a very Dorothy Sayers feel to it. The main characters are Philip Bethancourt, the wealthy amateur detective, and Jack Gibbons, a Scotland Yard sergeant. In this book they're in Yorkshire, surrounded by flood waters, and investigating a murder that may or may not relate to a serial killer, while Jack is still recovering from a recent gunshot wound. I enjoyed the three other books in the series, but thought this was one of the best.

I also read Tongues of Serpents by Naomi Novik, which came out this week, and enjoyed it a lot, too. It's the sixth book in the series, and starts out with Laurence and Temeraire trying to cope with their exile in Australia. The books are set in an alternate Napoleonic era that is becoming more and more alternate as the series progresses.
