(no subject)

Not much going on at the moment except the usual. Yesterday I worked on the third Cloud Roads book, then did more painting in the hallway, then worked on the YA project I'm collaborating on with a friend.

I'm watching Nora Prentiss on TCM as I do email and Facebook and Twitter this morning, and thinking, wow, the main character guy really is an idiot. Even Nora thinks so. A lot of the film noir I like (Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice) seem to start with someone making an astonishingly bad decision and then getting stuck with it (just like real life) but this guy is taking the cake, here.

nightwalker posted about Ellen Hopkins has been uninvited from the Teen Lit Fest in Humble, Texas. Ellen was invited by librarians she has worked with in the past, then asked not to come when it was revealed that another librarian (who may or may not have been approached by a parent first) went to the superintendent and complained that her books were inappropriate and would potentially cause offense. The superintendent, Mr. Sconzo, chose to uninvite Ms. Hopkins.

If you're in Oklahoma SF/F fandom, you may know John Ferguson: Oklahoma City TV's Count Gregore faces home foreclosure John is 82 years old, and in financial trouble due to medical costs incurred by his wife and daughter. The medical cost for both Pam and Billie were very extensive. Pam's insurance was canceled by the insurance company 18 months after her accident, and there has been no insurance to cover the seizure medication Pam is required to take. Billie's nursing center care was only partially covered by insurance. The result was that John and his family used all available funds to care for his wife and daughter. This included all of their retirement savings.

This is one of those things where if a lot of people give a little bit, you can accomplish a lot.
