The fire news is really not good. Here's the map of all the current fires: http://ticc.tamu.edu/Response/FireActivity/default.aspx

They're saying the worst one, the Bastrop fire, is still 0% contained. 25,000 acres have burned, 476 homes destroyed. The Austin American Statesman has info, plus if you want to panic accurately you can follow @statesman and @txstormchasers on Twitter, plus #centraltxfires

The Red Cross is taking donations and has some info on evacuation centers.

Thanks! Yeah, it's very freaky. I'd rather be having a hurricane; at least they only last so long and you know pretty much when they're going to stop.

That is what scares me about wildfires - you just don't know when they'll be over and a situation that seems controlled can quickly turn and become extremely out of control with no prospect of getting the upper hand until the right set of circumstances come along, and to get to that might involve letting a fire rage.

I'm glad that the Red Cross have gotten things set up already for those who've had to flee their homes. I really don't think I've hoped for rain so hard in my life...I wish I could send some of that 'Great British Weather' we bemoan so often in your direction.

Yeah, they are really, really scary. The forecast is showing no rain for the rest of the week at least. The most they're hoping for right now is that the wind will die down later tonight, which will keep it from jumping across highways and rivers like it's been doing.
