I have a post on Black Gate: http://www.blackgate.com/2013/03/13/how-well-does-the-cloud-roads-fit-as-sword-and-sorcery/ on The Cloud Roads as sword and sorcery, and a bit about defining genre too narrowly.

I don't think I would have defined The Cloud Roads as sword and sorcery, although I do see your point. As a selling point, though, I think it would confuse people looking for the ubiquitous wizard and swordsman. I can't say either that I look under such narrow definitions when I am looking for a book. I go to the 'fantasy' section, or the 'science fiction' section. The only problem there is when you have a book like mine which kinda falls into both categories. Then it gets confusing, but since they nearly always throw both together anyway...
For me the whole Raksura trilogy was just a wonderful, romping fantasy.

Thank you! Yes, I think books that mixed SF and F were a lot more common before they started to separate out the categories.
