Bad News

Terrible news for a lot of people yesterday: Strange Chemistry (who did my Emilie and the Hollow World and Emilie and the Sky World books) has shut down. None of the upcoming books will be published, and there's not word yet on what's going to happen with the books that were already out. (Basically if you wanted any of the Strange Chemistry titles, now would be a good time to get them, and the authors would really appreciate it.)

Here's the formal notice.

Here's the list of books Strange Chemistry published. (The "coming soon" section won't be published.)

The mystery line, Exhibit A Books, was also cancelled.

This is really depressing news. I've had nine total publishers (eighteen counting foreign language reprints) and this is the fourth one shot out from under me. A lot of young authors had their books cancelled, and people lost jobs, so it's always a miserable situation when this happens.

::sighs:: Everything is so ephemeral in this industry!

Yeah, I feel the most sorry for the debut authors. I can imagine how awful it feels.

I am so, so sorry to hear about this. :(

Aww, I'm so sorry, for you and every other author who was published or about to be by this house.

Thanks :) Yes, it's really most awful for the debut authors, or for the people who were finishing their first trilogy.

Yeah, this happened to my when my Aero Rangers series were being prepared for publication. Fortunately, in my case NONE of the titles actually saw the light, so I'm not stuck with a 6 book series that's been truly orphaned by the first title or two being published. Eventually I'll find a new publisher for my stuff. But the Emilie stories, being two books in, how the heck are you gonna sell that to another publisher? (Unless they sell really-really well) Given your (Martha's) excellent reputation and track record, I suppose she might be able to purchas all the unsold copies, then self publish the whole series, but Geez, what a pain in the butt. I certainly wouldn't have the energy to do it.

Re: Publishers collapse

Yeah, I'm not interested in self-publishing. I hope another publisher will pick up the line for everybody's sake.

I am so very sorry to learn about this. I hope that you can get your work picked up elsewhere (quickly), and find a more stable publisher.

Oh Gods, not again... :( You've been through enough hell with publishers already! And Strange Chemistry published a lot of other amazing authors, too. It's a huge loss to both writers and readers.

(Also, on a far more trivial scale, a loss to my budget, as I now have to buy all the SC books I ever wanted to read right now, or at least the ones from series I'm midway through already...)

Thanks. Yes, it was a great line, and there would have been so many more good books.

I'm very sorry to hear that :( I went and bought the two Emilie books while I still have the chance.

Oh, sad! I'm so sorry to hear about this.

Ugh, that's awful news - I'm sorry. It finally poked me into buying the second Emilie book though, and I also preordered the first Raksura collection while I was at it!

Thanks :) and thanks for preordering!

Very sorry to hear this! Do you know anything about the continuing availablity of the e-books?

Thanks :) I don't know really anything at this point. The parent publisher Angry Robot should keep the books available for at least a while.

Oh no! That sucks! :(

Yeah, it really does.

I'm sorry to hear that. I really like the Emilie books and would like to see more of them.

I really hate to hear this. Is there any chance Angry Robot will pick up some of the Strange Chemistry titles?

Thanks :) At this point it doesn't sound like it.

Well darn. I bought the second Emilie book a couple of weeks ago but I'd love to see you write and publish more of of this series. Good luck finding a new, more stable press.
